The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport or the NMMT has taken a significant step towards gender equality and improved accessibility by announcing a 50% concession on bus fares for all women. This change, which took effect on Monday, 14 October, mirrors a similar initiative implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation or the MSRTC in March. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this initiative.
NMMT Announces 50 Per Cent Concession To Women Riders
NMMT’s extensive network spans 77 routes, serving not only Navi Mumbai but also reaching neighbouring areas such as Mumbai, Borivali, Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan, Dahisar, Ambernath, Badlapur, Panvel, Ulwe Node, Khopoli, Karjat, and Rasayani.
According to an article which was recently published by Lokmat Times, the transport authority operates a diverse fleet comprising 40 non-air-conditioned buses and 37 air-conditioned vehicles, catering to a wide range of passenger needs and preferences.
This decision comes as a response to longstanding demands from women passengers, social organisations, and elected representatives who have been advocating for reduced fares on NMMT buses.
This Initiative Will Benefit Around 80,000 Women Riders
The implementation of this policy marks a significant victory for these groups and addresses a crucial aspect of public transportation accessibility. If reports are to go by, as many as 80,000 women will benefit from this initiative by the NMMT.
To ensure a smooth transition, NMMT has already updated its Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) to facilitate the issuance of discounted tickets to women passengers. Additionally, the transport authority has taken steps to inform all drivers, conductors, and supervisory staff about the new policy, ensuring its proper implementation across the network.
This move is expected to have far-reaching implications for women’s mobility in the region. By reducing the financial burden of public transportation, NMMT aims to encourage more women to utilise its services, potentially leading to increased participation in the workforce and greater access to educational and social opportunities.
