Good News! Work Begins On Airoli-Kalwa Railway Corridor’s 2nd Phase; Will Help Decongest Thane Station

We have some good news for Thane, the work on Airoli-Kalwa Suburban Railway Corridor’s second phase has finally kicked off! This elevated corridor project aims to decongest Thane station. It was divided into two phases and since the work on phase one concluded, the authorities have started working on the next phase. Now, the work on the Kalwa-Airoli connector has begun and it will have an elevated link to accommodate direct trains from Vashi-Belapur to Kalyan. Work On Phase 2 Begins, Will Have An Elevated Link

The Kalwa-Airoli Suburban Railway Corridor aims to streamline trans-harbour trains on this route and alleviate congestion at Thane station. Additionally, it will also help reduce travel time for passengers commuting from Navi Mumbai to Kalwa and beyond. Now, with the completion of Digha Gaon station, along with bridge no. 36/4 and 36/5, Phase 1 of this corridor is complete. It is now time for Phase 2 to push off in full swing.

This phase involves the major construction of the suburban corridor that will connect Airoli and Kalwa. It will have an elevated link that will run an elevated section after Digha Station. It will pass through parts of Kalwa and even accommodate direct trains from Vashi-Belapur to Kalyan. Furthermore, the construction includes an elevated Kalwa station with platforms, some booking offices, foot under bridges, and staircases, besides the related infrastructure. The corridor will also have a rail flyover incorporating a ballastless track for improved efficiency. It will have a set up similar to the Wadala corridor – where trains from Bandra and Panvel operate seamlessly.

How The Kalwa-Airoli Corridor Will Help Decongest Thane Station

The tentative cost of the Airoli-Kalwa railway line is around ₹476 crore. One of the key features of this railway corridor is decongesting Thane Junction. The Airoli-Kalwa Railway Corridor will have a direct line connecting Airoli and Kalwa and will in turn reduce the load on the Thane station. As a bonus, it also reduces the travel time for people commenting from Navi Mumbai to Kalwa and beyond.
