Google Doodle Pays An Ode To “Pani Puri” To Celebrate THIS Special Win That Happened In 2015

Google Doodle is known and appreciated by almost everyone who uses the search engine. The search engine giant is known to put out cute doodles or themed games to celebrate special days. And today, Google has tipped its hat off to the popular Indian street food “Pani Puri”. But why you ask? Well, it is to celebrate this special win back in 2015.

Google Doodle Celebrates South East Asian Delicacy “Pani Puri”


The Google Doodle today honours ‘pani puri,’ a beloved South East Asian street food. It commemorates a restaurant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which set a world record on July 12, 2015. The record made by the restaurant was for serving an impressive selection of 51 different flavours of Pani Puri.

In today’s doodle, which has turned into a game, the player needs to help the street vendor team to complete the orders for pani puri. The player is asked to choose the puris that match each customer’s flavour and quantity preferences also need to be checked to keep them satisfied.

Recognized by various names such as Puchka, Golgappa or Pani Puri, the popular South-East Asian street food has a very old origin story. It is said that the dish originated during the epic Mahabharata time.

The newlywed Draupadi was tasked with feeding her five husbands with very less resources and had to make do with what she had. With just some vegetables, leftover potatoes a small amount of wheat dough to work with, Draupadi stuffed small bites of fried dough with the potato and vegetable mixture.

And over the years, this invention went through several decades of variations and trials for us to today enjoy what we know as Pani Puri.

How Pani Puri Came To Be

Pani Puris might be known by different names around the country. But the emotion towards the street food remains the same. Emerging from the streets of India, Pani Puri has long dominated the street food game. Sooji Puri or Atta Puri are the two main variants of puri served widely in India. There is also a large variety of pani (water) such as meetha, khatta, hing wala and several others which are served with the puri.
