If you rely heavily on cab services, then we have some news for you all! On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the government will soon launch Sahkar Taxi, a cooperative-based taxi service across India. This announcement comes amid growing backlash from drivers of ride-hailing platforms like Ola and Uber over pricing tricks and allegations of discriminatory pricing.
Government To Launch ‘Sahkar Taxi’ Service Across India
According to The Economic Times, the Indian government is set to step in a race against Uber, Ola, and Rapido soon! The government announced a new cooperative-based taxi service called ‘Sahkar Taxi’ across the country soon, which will offer an alternative to these existing ride-hailing platforms.
The Sahkar Taxi service will allow cooperative societies to register two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers without intermediaries taking a cut from drivers’ earnings. This will, in turn, give drivers full control over their earnings, and set them free from commission cuts by third-party platforms.
As per Union Home Minister Amit Shah, this new taxi service aligns with the government’s broader vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation). It is being positioned as part of a larger effort to reform gig economy models.
