On Wednesday, during a function organised at Hyatt Ahmedabad, a guest found a dead cockroach in the sambar served to him. Angered by the incident, he made a video of the food and informed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Food Department about it. According to an NDTV report, the hotel’s kitchen has now been sealed for 48 hours for further inspections.

As per Bhavin Joshi, AMC’s Food Department officer, a formal complaint has been filed through the online portal against the hotel. Furthermore, while talking to NDTV, he said that the ‘Indian Kitchen’ section of the hotel was in an unhygienic state which prompted them to seal the area for a thorough inspection by the health department. The notice also warned of legal action if the “kitchen is reopened without the permission of competent authority.”

Further reports and a statement by Hyatt Ahmedabad on this incident are awaited.

Similar Incidents Of Food Contamination

Unfortunately, many incidents of insects being found in food have been making headlines recently! In July, students of JNTUH University College of Engineering Sultanpur in Hyderabad found a rat swimming in the chutney in the mess’s kitchen. They posted about the same online and even mentioned how this wasn’t the first time rodents or insects were spotted in the mess’s food.

In another incident, a passenger flying from Bengaluru to San Francisco with Air India found a metal blade in his in-flight meal. While the airline apologised for the incident, it did raise questions about food safety during in-flight meals. Not to forget the disturbing event where a Noida-based woman found a centipede in her Amul ice cream that she ordered online! And these are just a few recent incidents.

These rising numbers of incidents around food contamination raise questions about the state of food safety in India. Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments section.
