Gujarat to bid for the host of the 2036 Olympics by showcasing a proposal for world-class infrastructure with a metro expansion plan. The Centre received a proposal from Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC).
Gujarat To Bid For 2036 Olympics Host
In a report by Ahmedabad Mirror, a top official revealed that GMRC has proposed a 7 km metro extension. It will be from GIFT City to IIT-Gandhinagar. The metro extension will include six new stations on the extension for an estimated ₹1,750 crores. The official further revealed that the proposals are scheduled to be cleared this year.
Furthermore, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation also proposed its plans for an 8 km metro extension. This expansion will be from Thaltej Gam to Godhavi. This extension will cost about ₹2500 crore. The extensions will be developed in lieu of the world’s largest sporting event.
Moreover, to make commuting for passengers easier, GMRC’s proposal list also includes an additional 6 km metro connection from Koteshwar to Ahmedabad Airport. This connection aims to help passengers travel easily to and from the airport. This proposal includes a mix of four above-ground and four underground stations at a proposed cost of ₹1,800.

Proposals Will Be Fast-Tracked
The proposals have been requested by GMRC to receive fast-track clearances from the Centre. The project to be developed and open to the public would require a minimum of four to five years. In time for the Olympic deadline. Initially, these routes were planned to be part of the metro expansion of Phase 2. Now, they will be included in the Phase 3 expansion.

As per a report by Swarajya, Phase 2 operations are already in place. Services are operating from Motera to Sector-1 of Gandhinagar and then again from GNLU to GIFT City. The expansion will take place from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir. It’s currently in the process of construction. This metro line will be completed by the end of December this year.
