Gurgaon BYOB Venues Hit By New Restrictions; Here’s What We Know

As per a report in The Indian Express, several of Gurgaon’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze) venues are now facing major restrictions. Referred to as ‘ahatas’ or ‘taverns’ in the excise policies, these places, which were popular for hosting live music and events, will now be restricted from doing so. The proprietor of Ebowla, a popular club and BYOB joint in Gurgaon, shared his frustration and said they have grown tired of dealing with new restrictions every year.

Under the new Haryana excise policy, which came into effect on June 12, these joints are now restricted from hosting live events or musical performances. Not just that, the licensing fee has also increased, and as per the policy, these joints cannot expand beyond a single floor. They can operate only within a 1,000 square metre area. And yes, these rules will directly impact their business.

Many Owners Fear Business Losses

Many proprietors across the city are now upset and frustrated. As per the report in The Indian Express, Gaurav Katyal said he was forced to reduce his operational area by half, shut down the first floor, and pay ₹1.8 crore as a licence fee just to run his BYOB unit. Moreover, he had to pay ₹45 crore for the adjoining liquor store licence. He added that anyone new considering entering this business would now think twice.

Many other similar joints along Golf Course Extension Road are also facing the same issue. Without permission to host music or live events, many owners fear losing customers and facing major losses. One of the owners pointed out that not everyone can afford to go to bars and pay marked-up prices for the drinks. And in the long run, this might also result in a revenue loss for the government.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Amit Bhatia, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC) of Gurugram East, said it’s common for renewals of licences and policies to take time. He also said initial losses usually follow when taxes increase.

This new policy will surely be challenging for BYOB owners across Gurgaon. What do you think of it?
