Gurugram: Uber Go Charges ₹700 For 1.8 KM; 6-Seater UberXL Fare Less Than 4-Seater Uber Go

We cannot deny the contribution of cab and transport service providing companies at any time throughout the year. Are we running late? Let’s book a cab. Do we need to travel a bit far from home? Taking a cab looks like a better option than crowded public transportation facilities. On the other hand, these services often charge exorbitantly, making it impossible for commoners to book a cab, even when it is too important. We often hear about Netizens complaining about these companies asking for higher rates, especially in times of increased demand. A recent incident of Uber Go charging almost ₹700 for a short journey is baffling.

LinkedIn user Surya Pandey shared a small incident of him attempting to book an Uber to cover a distance of about 1.8 km in Gurugram. According to the shared screenshot, Uber Auto for 3 passengers charged ₹146.66. A ride on Uber Moto asked for ₹114.62. The fare to book Uber Go was ₹699.97. Lastly, travelling on UberXL and comfortable SUVs charged ₹588.94. The mobile app also notified, “Fares are slightly higher due to increased demand.”

The post left Netizens concerned about the surprising pricing structure of cabs and went viral on LinkedIn in no time. Asking for such higher rates for a journey of just 1.8 km is not understandable. Covering this short distance does not really take a lot of time and the thought of splurging ₹700 for a journey less than 10 minutes is indeed bewildering.

One of the most shocking realisations about this recent Uber incident is the striking dissimilarity between Uber Go and UberXL. We are aware of the differences between these cab rides. Uber Go transports a maximum of 4 passengers at once while 6 people can travel together on UberXL. Drivers pick up passengers in comfort SUVs for UberXL. However, Uber Go charged about ₹111 more than the UberXL option on that day.

Surya pointed out how companies working to provide solutions for cab accessibility and affordability are demanding 300 per cent higher for a ride “after just three raindrops in Gurugram.”

LinkedIn users are not very surprised to see the rise in fares. It is unfortunately a common incident faced by commuters quite regularly. A Netizen commented, “Sometimes, the fare of an auto even surpasses that of a cab” and we are not even too surprised. Another person wrote, “They are definitely not the reliable source of booking taxis.” He further added, “Specially with Uber, I had to get my billing corrected as they show a different charge at the booking and charge differently when you get down, only cause the driver took you for a ride.”
