Maharashtra continues to reel under the pressure of intense monsoon showers as heavy rainfall batters key regions, including Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. On Tuesday, relentless downpours led to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and major delays in suburban train services. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Maharashtra rains in several districts, urging authorities and residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions persist.
Mumbai Rains Lead To Citywide Disruptions
Mumbai faced the full force of the monsoon as heavy rains brought the city to a near standstill. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas such as Sion, Andheri, Kurla, Chembur and Dadar. A video shared by an X user captured the extent of waterlogging on Mumbai’s waterlogged streets. Commuters dealt with slow-moving traffic during peak hours, with many vehicles stranded in knee-deep water. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), multiple teams worked across affected areas to clear drains and ensure water receded where possible.
Several BEST buses were diverted or delayed due to flooded routes. Traffic police also issued updates throughout the day, advising people to avoid non-essential travel and use public transport where available. Despite the advice, congestion remained high across arterial roads, including the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
Suburban Rail Network Affected By Waterlogging
Mumbai’s suburban train network, which carries millions daily, also bore the brunt of the rain. Services on the Central and Harbour lines were delayed due to track flooding at locations like Thane, Vikhroli and Kurla. As reported by The Indian Express, commuters experienced extended wait times, overcrowding and slower trains, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours.

Railway officials deployed maintenance teams at key junctions to manage the water accumulation and restore smooth operations. Western Railway services remained comparatively better but still faced minor delays due to water pooling near tracks in the suburbs.
Maharashtra Rains: Red Alerts And Warnings Issued Across Districts
The IMD issued red alerts for districts including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. As per the IMD’s latest advisory, intense rain spells are likely to continue for the next 48 hours. The department advised local authorities to prepare for emergencies, including possible flooding and landslides in hilly terrain.
Disaster management teams are on standby across affected zones. Schools and colleges in several districts announced closures to ensure the safety of students. According to local media reports, no casualties have been reported so far, though a few incidents of tree falls and power outages were recorded.

Maharashtra’s monsoon, while crucial for water supply, has once again exposed the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather. Residents are urged to stay informed via official sources and avoid high-risk zones during heavy spells. As Mumbai rains show no signs of letting up, civic preparedness remains crucial to prevent further disruption.
