As per the report in People.com, an urgent travel warning has been issued for four European destinations: Austria, Czechia, Hungary, and Slovakia, after a sudden outbreak of hepatitis A. The rapidly spreading Hepatitis A virus in Europe has made over 2,000 people sick and caused 9 deaths so far. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported a gradual rise in cases between January and May 2025. Austria, Czechia, Hungary, and Slovakia together reported 2,097 infections.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious virus that causes liver infection. It spreads through infected stool, entering a person’s mouth, often through food or water contaminated by unwashed hands carrying the virus. The virus can also survive on surfaces for months. Touching contaminated surfaces and eating without washing hands can also lead to infection.
