As revealed by the Times of India, Gen Z and Millennials are following a new travel trend called shrinecation. Under the trend, the combined devotional travel with leisurely trips. Yes, this allows them to enjoy the best of both worlds rather than focusing just on religious rites or on leisurely travel. For travellers today, taking a pilgrimage is not just about faith anymore. It’s also about exploring the surrounding landscape and experiencing the local culture, and making fond memories.
In fact, this development comes at a time when spiritual tourism is seeing quite a rise amongst younger generations. Faith-based travels, which make up more than 60% of domestic travel in India, is also flourishing. As the industry is expected to see revenue of $4.6 billion by 2033, such trends are truly contributing towards this.
Kedarnath, Bodh Gaya & Rishikesh Are Popular Shrinecation Destinations
There are many people who favour locations that not just offer a solitary spiritual journey but also let them immerse themselves in the cultural aspect and foster meaningful connections. For instance, if a person is visiting the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, they are likely to visit the surrounding areas. Similarly, if a person is visiting the Laxman Temple in Rishikesh, they might just extend their trip to explore all that Rishikesh has to offer.
Keeping up with this trend, travel companies are also offering pilgrimage plus, which is a package specially curated for people who are looking to enjoy. Besides allowing them to immerse themselves in the religious travel, they are also getting offered yoga retreats and outdoor pursuits like bungee jumping, or river rafting, that allow them to enjoy the most of their time invested in travel. Bodh Gaya, besides Rishikesh, is another great example for this trend. Drawing Buddhist pilgrims, it attracts millions of tourists every year to the city where Buddha obtained enlightenment. Kedarnath is another great example of the same.
