According to a study which was recently published by the UCSF, there is a link between the consumption of sugar and genetic ageing. It is one of the first studies to establish a link between the two. As per the co-senior author of the study Dr. Elissa Epel, higher levels of sugar consumption worsen one’s metabolic health.

The underlying cause of this is that sugar increases the epigenetic age of a person. In other words, the more sugar you consume, the faster your cellular age will increase. Your cellular age refers to how old and worn out your cells are.

However, there are studies that show that quitting sugar may be very similar to quitting drugs as sugar triggers a similar reward system in our brains. Hence, if you have trouble quitting sugar, don’t feel bad as it is not an easy task.

For women, the amount is even lower. Women should, ideally, consume no more than 25 grammes of sugar per day. Besides sugar, processed food items are one of the most harmful things to consume and are thought to be the leading cause of the increase in colon cancer among young people.
