According to The Indian Express, the sharp rise in the cost of cooking essentials like potatoes and tomatoes has fueled the surge in home-cooked thali prices this November. Reportedly, the cost of the vegetarian thali surged to ₹32.7 from ₹30.5 a year ago.

This surge is driven by the price hike of tomatoes and potatoes, which make up about 26% of a thali cost. Crisil’s report found that the price of tomato increased by a whopping 35% year-on-year to ₹53/kg from ₹40/kg in November 2023. The prices of potatoes also increased by 50% year-on-year on a low base to ₹37/kg from ₹25/kg in November 2023.

Non-vegetarian thali, on the other hand, saw only a marginal increase. The price of the thali rose to ₹61.5 in November from ₹60.4 in 2023. The increase is due to a 3% surge in broiler chicken prices. Broiler chicken makes up 50% of the non-vegetarian thali cost.

Besides tomatoes and potatoes, there was also a 10% on-year surge noted in the prices of pulses. Furthermore, vegetable oil prices also increased by 13% on-year because of an import duty hike recently. However, these prices are expected to come down after fresh arrivals in December.

As per The Financial Express, the decline in LPG prices has helped balance the sharp rise in vegetable prices. However, the price surge in essential food items like potatoes and tomatoes is deeply worrying as they are quite critical for Indian households.
