A large crack was spotted on the Hosur flyover in Tamil Nadu. It disrupted traffic along the heavily travelled Chennai-Bengaluru Highway. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took immediate action by closing the flyover to ensure public safety. This led to the diversion of vehicles onto the adjacent service road, triggering long tailbacks and significant delays for commuters.
Hosur Flyover Crack Raises Structural Concerns
According to ANI, a noticeable 15 cm-wide crack and a lateral shift of about 50 metres appeared on the Hosur flyover near the bus stand area. The sudden development raised concerns about the structural integrity of the overpass. Officials from NHAI inspected the site and decided to close the flyover in both directions.

The affected section lies along the Chennai–Bengaluru National Highway (NH 44), a key arterial road that handles thousands of vehicles daily. Authorities have prioritised safety, citing the risk posed by continued use of the compromised structure.
Bengaluru-Bound Traffic Diverted, Congestion Follows
The flyover’s closure forced authorities to reroute all vehicles onto the Hosur service road. As reported by ANI, this diversion led to heavy congestion, with long queues forming on the approach roads. The traffic snarls were especially severe for vehicles travelling from Chennai and Salem towards Bengaluru.

The flyover typically helps ease the pressure on the main highway by carrying traffic over busy urban stretches. Its closure has not only affected local commutes but also slowed long-distance travel between two major metro cities.
Temporary Measures Taken, Expert Inspection Awaited
Officials have temporarily installed circular bearings to support the damaged beam, stabilising the flyover while awaiting further inspection. As per reports, a team of structural experts is scheduled to examine the site and assess the extent of the damage. Based on their findings, authorities will determine the timeline for repairs and potential reopening.
