According to an article which was recently published by India Today, this is the first time since Independence that this has happened. Household expenditures on food have dropped by as much as 50 per cent. As per this report, there is a major shift in the way Indians allocate budget.

If reports are to go by, many families are now using this saved money to diversify their food habits. They are now purchasing milk, eggs, meats, fruits and many other diverse food options. As per the article, the decrease in spending on food can be attributed to a variety of schemes that the government offers to underprivileged families.

This decrease shows that the accessibility to food has increased significantly and that now, people can use their resources for other things.

The poorest 20 per cent of the country have witnessed an increase in dietary diversity. Schemes like Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana or the PMGKAY are to be thanked for this. The poorest 20 per cent are now able to purchase items that were previously considered luxury for them.

In addition to this, the report has also uncovered some unfortunate findings. The efforts to boost iron intake in the general population have not produced an impact on the scale that was desired. Officials are trying to improve this.
