We’re not monkeying around, but the island nation of Sri Lanka came to a standstill because of a monkey! This time, it’s not Hanuman we are talking about. Sri Lanka is facing a 90-minute power cut on Monday and Tuesday as a monkey caused disruption in the nation’s coal power plant.
A Monkey In Sri Lanka Caused Nationwide Power Outage
At around 11 AM (local time) on Sunday, a monkey came in contact with a substation power grid at Panadura in Sri Lanka. The result? Sri Lanka was plunged into darkness due to a power outage. For several hours, the entire grid failed starting at 11:30 AM (local time). After several hours, power was finally restored at key installations including the national hospital. However, the government warned that water supplies could be terribly affected by the disruption.
Moreover, the island nation experienced a 90-minute power cut on Monday and Tuesday due to the unfortunate breakdown at the coal power plant. Not one or two hours, the nation faced a whopping six-hour nationwide blackout. Energy minister Kumara Jayakody stated to The Guardian that the monkey’s antics caused an imbalance in Sri Lanka’s power system. Many residents were forced to rely on generators as restoring power took several hours.
Power Rationing Continues; Water Supply Issues May Follow
As per a report by Hindustan Times, while the Ceylon Electricity Board apologised for the outage, it didn’t clarify the reason behind a single incident resulting in widespread disruption. Also, there is no update about the monkey’s condition. The Ceylon Electricity Board announced a whopping 90-minute power cut due to the power failure at the 900-megawatt Norochcholai coal power plant. Moreover, Sri Lankan authorities announced power rationing in two slots between 3 PM and 9:30 PM across different areas of Sri Lanka on Monday and Tuesday.
