Imagine sinking your fork into a dessert that marries the crispy, syrup-soaked allure of jalebi with the creamy, rich decadence of cheesecake. A culinary dream, isn’t it? This dream is a reality at Gallops, the famous Mumbai restaurant, where the dessert wizards have concocted the Jalebi Cheesecake. It’s a treat that promises not just to satisfy your sweet tooth, but to take you on a nostalgic journey and an adventurous ride all at once. But how did this treat come into being? Here’s the story!

The Story Behind The Iconic Jalebi Cheesecake

The brain behind this innovative dessert is Chef Yajush Malik, a man whose culinary roots run deep into his family traditions. Growing up, Chef Yajush was no stranger to grand feasts, courtesy of his grandmother, an army wife who was well-versed in the art of entertaining. Social gatherings in their house featured sprawling spreads of delicious food. And with such feasts came the inevitable next-day leftovers, among them, heaps of jalebi.

Chef Yajush’s grandmother had a magical way of repurposing these leftover jalebis. She would top them with custard and bake them into what became known in their home as Jalebi Pudding. It was a dessert that young Yajush cherished and grew up enjoying.

Years later at Gallops, a wave of nostalgia and a craving for his grandmother’s jalebi pudding washed over him. But this time, he decided to offer a fresh, modern twist. Thus, the Jalebi Cheesecake was born. Picture a base of crushed cheesecake crust, layered with a New York Cheesecake Philly cream cheese batter, and then, the pièce de résistance, golden, crispy jalebis interwoven into the creamy batter.

The result is nothing short of a masterpiece—a dessert that combines the best of both worlds. From the moment it debuted, the Jalebi Cheesecake was a hit. The recipe was so perfect that it has remained unchanged since its inception. The crunchy, syrupy jalebi perfectly complements the smooth, rich cheesecake.

For those who have had the pleasure of dining at Gallops, the Jalebi Cheesecake is a well-loved staple, a sweet comfort that they return to time and again. For those who haven’t yet experienced it, this dessert is the perfect excuse to plan a visit.
