According to Aviation Blogs, the DGCA and Indian airlines have laid down rules regarding the transportation of alcohol on domestic flights. These rules were introduced to address the rising number of queries regarding carrying local wines, beers, and other beverages via air travel in India.

Check-In Baggage Rules For Alcohol

Passengers can carry up to 5 litres of alcohol in their check-in baggage. However, the alcohol content must range between 24% and 70% by volume. As per Aviation Blogs, the DGCA has strictly prohibited alcohol with a content exceeding 70%. Along with that, all alcoholic bottles must be in their original, unopened packaging. The bottles must be leak-proof and fully sealed. Airlines have a full right to reject the bottles which are leaking and partially opened.

Different Rules For Beverages With Low Alcohol Content

Beverages with less than 24% alcohol, such as wines and beers, have different rules. According to DGCA, there is no quantity limit on these drinks in the check-in baggage. This means passengers can carry their wines and beers with more flexibility during domestic travel. However, for cabin baggage, only the duty-free alcohol bought at the airport is allowed. But it must be packed in a transparent plastic bag and should not exceed the one-litre limit. Moreover, Indian aviation regulations strictly prohibit passengers from consuming alcohol onboard. Only the alcohol served exclusively by the airlines will be allowed.

These rules come as a relief for travellers heading to regions known for local alcohol. Now, they can carry it with more flexibility. Still, it’s best to follow the DGCA rules carefully and also check state-level alcohol laws before flying.
