Have there been times when you have savoured the warm butter croissants of Paris or tried the deep-dish cheesy pizzas of New York but got anxious from the sheer thought of the tipping process that follows? Tipping culture varies significantly across different countries, and understanding the local customs can help you navigate these practices while travelling. Don’t worry, here’s your worldwide tipping guide for 9 big cities overseas!

How Much Should You Tip In These 9 Cities Overseas?

Tipping is the process of appreciating those in the hospitality service in a monetary form for their service provided to you. While in India, we often tend to tip as per our wish, these 9 cities have their own tipping customs that you should know about.

1. Tokyo

Claiming its place as the world’s sushi capital, Tokyo’s tipping customs don’t necessarily mandate tipping for customers but appreciate it as a form of respect towards the restaurant and its staff.

2. Paris

Just finished enjoying your hot coffee with a side of buttery croissants in Paris? Well, then be sure to leave a tip ranging from 5-10% of your total bill, as it is customary in Paris, to show your appreciation for the service you received.

3. Italy

Known for its pasta,  it is customary for restaurants in Italy not to anticipate tips. But it’s important to emphasise that there may be instances where a service charge could be included, which can occasionally lead to confusion for visitors. However, the tipping percentage can be considered between 5-10%.

4. Sydney

If your tour guide was kind enough to guide you while you soaked in the beauty of the Sydney Opera House, you might want to consider approximately an additional 10% of the total fee they charged you. While many avoid tipping higher than 10% as they believe hospitality workers are handsomely paid, you can go beyond the 10% for exceptionally good service.

5. London

Similar to London, while tipping isn’t a custom rule, a 10-15% tip based on your total bill is appreciated for good service and above 15% for excellent service. But be sure to read the fine print of your receipt as some places tend to levy a service charge.

6. Beijing

Beijing again does not have a mandatory rule for tipping and in fact, views tipping as out of the ordinary and rude. The hospitality sector of China believes that the service is expected to be of a price determined by the employer and not the customers.

7. Madrid

If you’re a football fan visiting the city of  Madrid, make sure you tip your server between 5-10% of your total bill for their service as service charges are rarely included in most places.

8. Rome

Rome does not typically have a definite percentage for tipping on their bills, but a 5-10% amount of your total bill value helps the workers gain a little more atop their salaries.

9. New York

And lastly, of course, one of the most expensive cities in the world demands a higher tipping percentage as well. A tipping percentage in New York has to range between 20-25%, but anything below 22% is seen as stingy or rude.
