Why Is This Event Significant?

Held every 12 years at one of four sacred locations—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, or Nashik—where rivers are thought to carry heavenly blessings, Mahakumbh is one of the biggest and most revered religious gatherings in the world. It is said to honour the celestial contest for the nectar of immortality (Amrit) that took place at these sites and has its roots in Hindu mythology. In the belief that a holy bath in the sacred rivers will purge sins and bring about spiritual liberation (moksha), millions of devotees, saints, and ascetics, including Naga sadhus and other Babas’ sects, congregate to partake. In addition to its religious significance, Mahakumbh is a thriving social and cultural occasion that promotes harmony, intellectual exchange, and the generational passing down of age-old knowledge.
