Hurricane John Hits Mexico; 3 Reported Dead So Far

With mudslides, roofs blown away, uprooted trees, and ripped-off electrical posts, Hurricane John made landfall in Mexico on Monday. The storm rapidly intensified before the landfall and hit the coast with the maximum sustained winds of 193 kmh! As per a CNN report, the hurricane first hit the south-southwest of Marquelia in Guerrero.

As per the latest report, while the hurricane has weakened to a tropical storm, it is still deadly. From the southern coast, it moved to Acapulco in Oaxaca state on Tuesday evening and triggered a severe flood-like situation. As per the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane John’s movement and interaction with mountains contributed to catastrophic rainfall along the coast and inland.

So far, 3 people have been reported dead in hurricane-related incidents in Guerrero. As per reports, two deaths were reported in Tlacoachistlahuaca and a third in Malinaltepec.

There has also been severe infrastructural damage that left seven affected municipalities in Mexico without electricity for several hours. Thankfully, the authorities were able to restore power by Tuesday afternoon.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask people to “seek higher ground and protect themselves” as much as possible. He also reminded them “that life is the most important thing; material things can be replaced.”

Videos and pictures surfacing online show how the torrential rains in the last few days have left many roads in the country in a precarious position, thus affecting commutes.
