Hyderabad is a city that is growing at an incredible pace. Any city that grows at such a fast pace needs optimal connectivity. Hence, keeping this in mind, the Telangana government is trying to get a second commercial airport in the city. If the request is granted, Hyderabad will be one of the few cities in the country with more than one airport. Here are all the details about this piece of news.
Hyderabad May Soon Get 2nd Commercial Airport
Hyderabad is a bustling city and one that is growing continuously. As such, in a recent cabinet meeting, the State Industries Minister, KT Rama Rao (KTR) mentioned the need for a second airport in the city. The meeting was presided over by the Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR).
In the meeting, KTR suggested that the Defence airport at Hakimpet can also be utilised as a commercial airport. Similar to the airports in Pune and Goa, it can function on a hybrid model where it operates both civil and defence aviation.
As of now, the city has just one airport at Shamshabad, which is the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport or the RGIA. It operates around 2.5 crore passengers annually, according to an article recently published by Siasat.
Defence Ministry To Review State’s Request
Hence, the Telangana government has submitted a request to develop a second civilian airport at the Hakimpet defence airport. This request will be reviewed and taken up by the Defence Ministry.
If the request is granted, the city will join the list of the few Indian cities that have two airports. Delhi is also one of the cities with two international airports. One is the Indira Gandhi Gandhi International Airport or the IGIA and the other is the Hindon International Airport.
Goa is the smallest state in the country and it has two airports. One is the Mopa Airport which is also known as Manohar International Airport.
