There is a myth that having soda can help clear your throat if food gets stuck in your throat. However, a recent study found out that this particular piece of advice is not true. The origin of this myth can be traced back to a study published in a medical journal called the “African Journal of Emergency Medicine.”

The study said that soda could be used to clear the throat if food got stuck there. It was believed that the carbon dioxide in the soda helps in breaking down and dislodging the food and clearing the oesophagus. Hence, nurses as well as doctors believed it to be true. However, another study was published recently which highlighted that this myth is not true.

The study was published in a scientific journal called The British Medical Journal Association or BMJ. The study was conducted by researchers from the Amsterdam University Medical Centers. They found that the ‘soda trick’ as it were, made no difference when it came to clearing the oesophagus. So, they recommended having water instead.

In the study, they monitored a total of 51 patients in five Dutch hospitals. The patients, who were waiting for endoscopy, were divided into two groups. One group was given soda and the other was given water. If the soda trick worked, then patients who were given soda would have reported the obstruction in their throat getting cleared earlier than the ones who were given water.

However, this wasn’t the case. There was a marginal if any, difference between the time it took for the two groups to feel better. This shows that such issues might be resolved on their own if they are given enough time. As a matter of fact, the study states that 61 per cent of the patients improved partially or completely in the emergency department.

Hence, the next time you have something stuck in your throat, it is better to reach for a glass of water than soda.
