I’m A Delhiite & I Don’t Like Momo But This Is The Street Food I Love & Grew Up Eating!

Delhi street food

I’ve gotten weird looks, been in arguments, and even been told to never admit this out loud, but here I am, telling it out loud to the world: I’m a Delhiite, and I don’t like momos! The weird texture and the questionable fillings of this street food have made me keep my distance and have, in turn, made people doubt the Dilliwali in me. But I grew up with real Delhi street food and have seen the city’s food scene evolve into something truly vibrant and diverse. So, no, I refuse to believe that momos are the ultimate symbol of this city’s incredible street food culture.

The Real Street Food Of Delhi!

I have grown up seeing people line up outside Sita Ram Diwan Chand early in the morning on weekends to start their day on the right note. Some even head there after a long night of partying because chole bhature is where Delhi’s street food shines the brightest!

While Chawri Bazaar is known for its sanitary market and book shops, Ashok Chaat Corner made a name in the city with its delectable chaat. People often head there just to savour its delicious gol gappa, and I am guilty of travelling all the way there for it too!

UPSC Chaat Wala? A 10/10 if you like your aloo chaat loaded with flavours and aloo tikki a little spicy! While I agree Chandni Chowk’s oh-so-famous shops can be disappointing at times, the place has maintained the sanctity of Delhi’s street food, and I am all for it.

Dishes That Hit Taste Buds & Nostalgia

Here are the dishes I grew up eating and still believe are a true testament to the greatness of Delhi’s street food –

1. Gol Gappe – We’ll start strong with the one dish that can make any Delhiite (no matter how big a momo lover) fall on their knees!

2. Aloo Chaat – A personal favourite, this one needs to be perfectly crispy, loaded with mint chutney, and spices.

3. Dahi Bhalla – It ain’t good till it’s messy, and that’s what dahi bhallas are all about in Delhi!

4. Raj Kachori – This is a king-size dish that rules Delhi’s street food scenes, and if you can finish it alone, then you have my greatest respect!

5. Nankhatai – Forget cookies, this is what hits a home run for Delhi folks–wrapping nostalgia and flavour with each bite!

6. Ram Laddu – No idea how this street delicacy got its name, but no foodie in the city can resist this dish.

7. Aloo Tikki – Crispy, golden, loaded with flavours, this is the ultimate comfort food for a true Delhiwala!

8. Chole Bhature – You didn’t think I’d forget this fine example of Delhi’s street food, now did you?

9. Kebabs – Juicy, smoky, and bursting with spice, this is what we call perfection!

10. Matar/Chole Kulcha – Soft, fluffy kulchas paired with spicy, tangy matar, tell us a better food combination!

I have nothing against momos. My only gripe is when they’re hailed as the ultimate street food of Delhi. The city’s street food scene is far too rich and diverse to be reduced to just one dish. To say otherwise? Honestly, it’s almost criminal. And with that, I rest my case!
