As per the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest forecast, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir by June 24. For Monday, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the Delhi-NCR region. Scroll on to know more.
Yellow Alert For Rain In Delhi, Gurgaon & Neighbouring Cities
According to Hindustan Times, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad for June 23. Light to moderate rainfall through the day, which is likely to intensify by evening. The heavy rain will be accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph and frequent lightning strikes. This weather is expected to continue through the night.
The good news for the folks in Delhi-NCR is that the rain will continue on June 24 and 25. Repeated spells of rainfall are likely throughout the day and night for the next couple of days in the region. The weather department has also indicated that the southwest monsoon is set to arrive in Delhi and neighbouring cities by June 24. If it does, this would be the earliest onset for the city since 2013, when the monsoon arrived on June 16.
While the intensity of the rain may vary in the next few days, no heatwave-like conditions are expected during the week in Delhi-NCR. The rain is also expected to improve the region’s Air Quality Index (AQI). On Monday, Delhi’s AQI fell in the ‘satisfactory’ category, after days of ‘poor’ air quality in the city.
Heavy Rain Expected In These Areas
According to IMD’s weather update for North India, the current weather conditions of the region are in favour of the monsoon to progress further across north and northwest India. They mentioned that while the monsoon has already covered most parts of Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and some parts of Punjab, other regions will see rain in the coming days.
As per Sunday’s weather update, more parts of Rajasthan and Punjab, some parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, and the remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu will see the onset of monsoon in the next two days.
