IMD Yellow Alert Issued As Delhi-NCR Braces For Continued Heavy Rain; Waterlogging And Traffic Congestion Reported

Delhi and its neighbouring regions in the National Capital Region (NCR) are currently under the grip of a persistent monsoon spell. A fresh wave of heavy showers inundated the city and its outskirts on Friday morning, causing widespread water-logging and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR till July 27 for the region, indicating the likelihood of continued rainfall.

A slow-moving convective cloud mass hovering over the region is the primary reason behind the incessant downpour. The IMD has predicted moderate to intense spells of rain throughout Friday, urging residents to exercise caution while commuting due to the high possibility of water-logging on roads.

The weather forecast for the region is grim. Such adverse weather conditions can lead to localised flooding, water-logging in low-lying areas, and reduced visibility. Traffic disruptions are inevitable due to waterlogged roads, resulting in longer travel times.

The IMD has issued essential safety guidelines for residents. They are advised to check traffic conditions before leaving home, adhere to traffic advisories issued by authorities, avoid areas prone to waterlogging, and stay away from vulnerable structures.

Daily Life Impacted

The recent downpour has significantly contributed to the region’s rainfall tally. Delhi University has recorded the highest rainfall with 89.5 mm, followed by IGNOU at 34.5 mm and Pitampura at 8.5 mm. While the rain offers some respite from the scorching summer heat, it has also brought its own set of challenges, including water-logging, traffic congestion, and potential damage to property.

The incessant rain has severely impacted daily life in Delhi-NCR. Schools and offices have been affected due to water-logging and traffic congestion. Public transportation has also been disrupted, causing inconvenience to commuters. Residents have faced difficulties in carrying out routine activities, and businesses have reported losses due to the adverse weather conditions.

The local authorities are working tirelessly to clear waterlogged areas and restore normal traffic flow. However, with the IMD predicting more rain, the situation is likely to remain challenging for the next few days.

While the rain is essential for replenishing water bodies and improving air quality, it can also lead to environmental challenges. Water pollution is a concern due to the mixing of rainwater with contaminated water from drains and sewers. Additionally, the increased humidity levels can create favourable conditions for the growth of mosquitoes, leading to a potential rise in vector-borne diseases.
