Imphal Ring Road Project To Have Women-Operated E-Vehicles; Authorities To Provide Training Programmes To Drivers

Manipur has taken a significant step toward sustainable urban transport solutions on the upcoming Imphal Ring Road project. They have decided to introduce women-operated e-buses and e-rickshaws on this road. This sustainable fleet of public transport aims to lessen traffic congestion and empower women in the city. Imphal Ring Road project will have women-operated e-buses and e-rickshaws . The construction works on this project will commence in May this year and are likely to transform transportation dynamics in the city. The authorities aim to complete it within 28 months.

The state is likely to deploy as many as 20 e-buses and a total of 52 e-rickshaws on this road – all operated by women. The Imphal Ring Road aims to empower women in the area and provide employment opportunities to them. It will also help ease the traffic congestion in the city. The selected women operators will be provided with rigorous training programmes. The selected drivers will be given necessary skills to navigate the urban landscape and ensure seamless operations.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has funded the Imphal Ring Road project for almost ₹1,760 crores. It encompasses a length of 51.23 kilometres and will cover Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur. The first phase of this project will pass through key areas in the Imphal East district before culminating at Heingang Ching.

The first phase of the ring road will begin at Kyamgei Pal Ahanbi and will traverse through Canchipur-Bashikhong-Uchekon-Kongba Bazar-Ayangpalli Road and the Porompat Crossing. From this point, they will construct a 1.570-kilometre spur road.

According to the authorities, the Imphal Ring Road project “promises a new era of urban mobility, characterised by efficiency, sustainability, and inclusivity.” Furthermore, the introduction of e-vehicles will give a comprehensive and sustainable transportation boost to this road.
