Kerala’s bar landscape has seen significant expansion over the past two years, with 118 new establishments receiving operating licences. The total number of bars across the state has increased from 718 in November 2022 to 836 at present, reflecting an average growth of five new establishments monthly. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this increase in the number of bars in Kerala.

According to an article which was recently published by Onmanorama, Ernakulam district leads with the highest concentration of bars at 195. This is followed by Thrissur with 112 and Thiruvananthapuram with 94 establishments.

The northern district of Kasaragod has the lowest number with just 10 bars. Distribution across other districts varies considerably, with Kottayam hosting 75 establishments, whilst Wayanad has 18. The current regulatory framework mandates that hotels classified as three-star and above are eligible for bar licences.

Among the 836 operational bars, 52 hold five-star classifications, whilst approximately 70 per cent of the remaining establishments carry three-star ratings. Recent growth has been particularly notable in certain regions.

How Many Bars In Total Does Kerala Have Now?

Ernakulam received 25 new licences and Thiruvananthapuram followed with 22 new establishments. All districts except Kasaragod have witnessed the addition of new bars during this period. The geographical distribution of bars across Kerala’s 14 districts is as follows:

Southern Region:

  1. Thiruvananthapuram (94)
  2. Kollam (70)
  3. Pathanamthitta (27)

Central Region:

  1. Alappuzha (50)
  2. Kottayam (75)
  3. Idukki (28)
  4. Ernakulam (195)

Northern Region:

  1. Thrissur (112)
  2. Palakkad (50)
  3. Malappuram (50)
  4. Kozhikode (40)
  5. Wayanad (18)
  6. Kannur (37)
  7. Kasaragod (10)

The excise policy for the current financial year remains pending announcement, with discussions ongoing at the administrative level.
