President Droupadi Murmu becomes the first Indian President to visit Mauritania. She travelled to this African nation with Minister of State Sukanata Majumdar and Members of Parliament Mukeshkumar Dalal and Atul Garg. India and Mauritania signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Here’s everything you must know about it.

India And Mauritania Signed MoUs On Thursday

Taking to the X platform, the President of India (@rashtrapatibhvn) shared pictures of President Droupadi Murmu and President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania at the Presidential Palace.

During President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Mauritania, both countries signed these MoUs. Four MoUs have been signed focusing on different areas. Along with the Indian President, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was present during this significant official decision. Both leaders held a meeting at Nouakchott’s Presidential Palace. She visited the Presidential Palace following a community reception event. According to the President of India’s X post, they discussed ways to strengthen the countries’ relationship and diplomatic ties.

After the delegation-level talk between the presidents, the MoUs were signed in different areas and exchanged. The prioritised areas are training of diplomats, cultural exchange, visa exemption and Foreign Office consultations. According to a report by The Times of India, India and Mauritania decided to provide visa requirements exemption for diplomatic and official/service passport holders.

With this new official decision, nationals of India and Mauritania fulfilling the eligibility criteria by having these passports will be allowed to visit Mauritania and India respectively for a maximum period of 90 days without the necessity of carrying a visa. They can travel without a visa for 90 days within 180 days.

A Reception Was Hosted

According to a press release by the Press Information Bureau, the Ambassador of India to Mauritania organised a reception. President Droupadi Murmu attended the event and addressed the members of Mauritania’s Indian Community. She praised them for their dedication and hard work to enhance and strengthen Mauritania’s socio-economic development. The President also emphasised that the community’s contributions and competence play a crucial role in India’s development.

This event marks a significant partnership between India And Mauritania.
