We experienced Bhopal’s swaad and andaaz with comedian Aaditya Kulshreshth, popularly known as Kullu. While his sharp writing and comic timing need no introduction, fans have often wondered how Aaditya became ‘Kullu’, a name that has stuck for so long that most people hardly even know his real one!
How Aaditya Kulshreshtha Became ‘Kullu’
Born Aaditya Kulshreshth, he was nicknamed Sunny by his family. Since Aaditya means ‘Sun’ in Hindi, they gave him this cuter version as a pet name. However, as he puts it, studying in a boys’ school left no room for cuteness. “You can’t give a cute nickname to anybody in a boy’s school. Vidhi ke vidhan se, mera naam Aadi hona chahiye that, but woh cute ho jata toh woh nahi rakha. Toh unhone kaha iska naam ‘Kullu’ rakho iske surname se,” he recalls.
Now, technically, that nickname should have ceased to exist after school, right? Well, not really. He elaborated, “Fir woh Kullu chalta raha and jab main radio main gaya, toh wahan I got to know that you have to have a nickname. ‘Raj’, ‘jock’, ya aisa kuch. Toh maine kahan mere paas khud ka nickname hai, tum matt do mujhe, and wahan maine ‘Kullu’ rakh diya. With this name, it feels like you know me.”
The name has now become so famous that hardly anyone calls him Aaditya anymore. He jokingly adds that only his mother and ‘kuch premikiyan’ call him Aaditya now.
Rapid-Fire Round To Describe Fellow Comedians
We also played a game of rapid fire with Kullu and asked him to tell the first thought that comes to his mind when we say the name of some of the most famous stand-up comedians in India, in a word, and started with Zakir Khan. He promptly replied with, “Bade bhai.”
Kenny Sebastian, he said, was cute. Next on the list was Vir Das, and he rightly described him as legendary. When talking about Anubhav Singh Bassi, the first thing that comes to Kullu’s mind is again, ‘bade bhai.’ As for Samay Raina, he feels he is a good friend.
