“I Want To Make It A Cool Thing,” Karan Aujla Opens Up About Why He Calls His Music P-Pop

From writing chart-topping hits to becoming one of the most loved Punjabi artists of today, Karan Aujla’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Over a delicious Sunday Brunch with Kamiya Jani, he opens up about his journey, growing up years, and most importantly–how he came up with the name ‘P-Pop’ for his music!

Karan Aujla On Why He Calls His Music ‘P-Pop’

For years, the world has grooved to K-pop, but now it’s time to turn the spotlight on P-pop and see what it has to offer! But what exactly is P-pop, and how did it come into existence? “P-Pop is the name of my new album, P-Pop Culture. P-pop stands for ‘Punjabi pop culture’. Long story short, I wanted to name my music, the music that I make and the way I combine two sounds,” Karan Aujla shared.

“I always felt like I didn’t have the right name for my music, and even for Punjabi music, I feel like it was just ‘Punjabi music’. So, I just really wanted to create my own genre and name in some way, and that’s when we came up with this name–Punjabi Pop Culture, because that’s what it is all about–representing your own culture, where you come from, your roots,” he added.

Global Stage For Indian Music

And it’s not just about his music. Karan shared that he wants people to recognise his songs and Indian songs, in general, on a global level and not simply associate them with weird dance moves. “I want to make it into a cool thing. Like Spanish music plays in clubs, like house music plays at parties in Europe, I want to put Indian music out there. I know it is there, but it needs to be more out there. Agar hum bahar jaaye toh saare log garv ke sath yeah bol sake ki yeah humara banda hai,” Karan Aujla elaborates on his thought behind naming his music P-Pop.
