‘If You Can Drive In Surat, You Can Drive Anywhere In The World,’ Anushka Rathod On Surat’s Wild Driving

Anushka Rathod

On our latest episode of Tere Gully Mein, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, met with Finance Influencer Anushka Rathod in Surat, Gujarat. Hailing from the city known for its delicious food, she took us to various popular spots in town and treated us to unique dishes like locho, khawsa, cold cocoa, and a lot more. But this episode wasn’t just about indulging in delicious treats, it was also about getting to know Surat’s culture and the entrepreneurial spirit of the town, as well as the wild driving stories she shared along the way.

Anushka Rathod Calls Herself A Khichdi

While indulging in a delicious bowl of khaqsa, we found out that Anushka Rathod refers to herself as a khichdi. Why? Because she was born in Mumbai, her mother is Marwari, her father is Mewari, and she has grown up in Surat. At her house, both Gujarati and Marwari dishes are prepared. But it’s all blended so well that she can hardly tell what belongs to which cuisine.

As we headed to the next spot for another treat on our food trail, Anushka Rathod shed light on the wild driving stories of Surat. She revealed that auto drivers, whenever they have to take a turn, whether left or right, instead of using the usual indicators, often use their leg. If they lift their left leg up, it means they need to turn left, and if they lift their right leg, it means they need to turn right.

She also added that it has become so natural for her to look both ways while making a turn, even on a one-way road, because it’s common for people in Surat to drive on the wrong side. She truly believes that if someone can drive well in Surat, they can drive anywhere in the world. It’s a practice that prepares you for anything on the road.

We Tried Cold Coco With Her

During this food trail, one of the most delicious things Anushka Rathod treated us to was the cold coco at A1 Coco in Surat. It’s a delightful Surati take on regular hot chocolate, where chocolate is mixed with milk and cooked until it thickens, then chilled for some time. When it’s time to serve, the rich liquid is poured over crushed ice, and I bet you can imagine just how delicious it tastes.
