If you think Goa is all about beach shacks, parties, and cafés, the latest episode of Tere Gully Mein with Sameera Reddy is here to prove otherwise. The actress takes us beyond the touristy side of the state and into the bustling streets of Mapusa, where she explores the iconic fish market, colourful fruit and vegetable bazaars, chats with local vendors, and introduces us to authentic Goan ingredients. Along the way, she also explains the true meaning of the Goan ‘susegad’ lifestyle, and honestly, it’s a way of life we could all learn from.
What Is “Susegad Life”?
As we tucked into a traditional Goan fish thali at Shraddha Classic Canteen in Mapusa, Sameera Reddy introduced us to the idea of the ‘susegad’ life. Curious to know more, we asked her what it really meant, and her explanation made us want to embrace the philosophy ourselves.
According to Sameera, susegad is all about slowing down and making time to truly unwind. She explained that after working hard, people in Goa believe in taking a break to relax and enjoy the moment instead of constantly rushing from one thing to the next.
Derived from the Portuguese word sossegado, meaning ‘quiet’ or ‘peaceful’, susegad reflects a laid-back Goan way of life centred around contentment, balance, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Mind you, it’s not about being lazy; it’s about rejecting the pressure of the endless hustle and making space for rest, good food, and quality time. And honestly, that’s a lesson we could all take from Goa.
