Shankar Mahadevan invited our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, to his Vashi home to be a part of the grand Ganpati celebration at the Mahadevan household. After the puja, the entire family sat down for the much-awaited prashad, which was a banana leaf full of delicious vegetarian delicacies! While enjoying the mouth-watering meal, Kamiya asked Shankar sir about the song that people just can’t get over–Breathless! And here’s what he had to say about it.
How Shankar Mahadevan’s Iconic ‘Breathless’ Was Made
“I was collaborating with Javed Akhtar saab for the first time. Normally, it would have been ki ek fast song kar do, ek club song kar do, ek sad song kar do, ek romantic song kar do, and ho gayi album. We were finding that pretty boring. Toh yeah idea jab Javed saab ne mujhe narrate kiya toh I was like, isse shuru karte hai! Indian classical music ko kaise improvise kar dena in a without boundary kind of a song–seamless,” Shankar Mahadevan recollects how the song was made.
So, did he even record the song in one ‘breathless’ take? “Nahi, nahi. Breathless hota toh, I would have died! Aaj main yahan nahi hota. Main 30 saal se perform kar raha hun, and koi bhi aisa show nahi hai jiss main maine Breathless perform na kiya ho. Not just once, twice toh hota hi hai at each show,” he shared.
Of course, we had to ask him to sing the iconic song for Curly Tales’s audience as well, and he was joined by his sons, Siddharth Mahadevan and Shivam Mahadevan, and it was a delight!

Biggest Food In The Family
When asked who the biggest foodie in the family was, everyone admitted their love for food. But, unanimously, they crowned Shankar Mahadevan as the ultimate foodie! We played a ‘Who’s Most Likely To’ game, and the family revealed that between the four of them, Sangeeta Mahadevan is likely to eat most modaks! As for the Ganpati celebration, the entire family comes together to decorate the house and take up responsibilities. Interestingly, Shankar Mahadevan confessed that he is most likely to forget the aarti mid-way. He even added that he often forgets his own lyrics on stage as well!
