On Tuesday morning, the transit corridor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, became a medical emergency hub. The incident involved a pregnant female passenger requiring urgent assistance. What unfolded further was the swift coordination of the aviation hub’s medical and operational team, which led to the safe delivery of a baby girl inside an airport ambulance, turning the crisis into joy.
What Exactly Happened At The Airport?
The incident took place at 5:17 am on Tuesday in the corridor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. Early in the morning, the airport medical team received information about a female transit passenger requiring urgent assistance. The 26-year-old Tanzanian national, who was reportedly around 36 weeks pregnant, experienced severe abdominal pain while transiting through the international area.

Soon after receiving the information, the CSMIA’s medical team quickly arranged for the doctors. Who then found the patient in active labour with contractions and signs of water breakage.
Delivery In A Moving Ambulance Van
The expectant mother was then transferred onto an airport ambulance buggy stretcher with the help of airline staff and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Around 5:40 am, the ambulance departed from the Mumbai airport to the hospital along with the airport medical team and airline staff.
However, that was not just it; the woman went into full labour halfway through the journey. There was no hospital ward or operating theatre available; only doctors were present in the ambulance, where the baby was delivered while the vehicle was in motion.

Both mother and child were rushed to the emergency ward of the hospital by 5:55 am, where they were given proper medical treatment. Hospital authorities later confirmed that both the mother and the newborn were stable and healthy and were kept under observation with care continuing as per standard obstetric and paediatric protocols.
Terminal operations teams of the Mumbai airport coordinated closely with immigration officials, enabling the swift issuance of a temporary transit visa and preventing any procedural delay at a critical moment. What started with a chaotic morning soon turned into a joyous occasion, and all thanks to the aviation medical and operational teams.
