Good news! In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Netflix and the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) have partnered to promote Indian destinations on screen. The collaboration combines Netflix’s storytelling power with the ministry’s vision to showcase the depth and breadth of Incredible India. Here’s more on what it means.
Netflix Partners With Ministry Of Tourism To Promote Indian Destinations & Culture
Netflix is our ultimate source of entertainment, ideal for weekends or a quick break from work. It is literally easy to lose ourselves in new stories and destinations through international series we watch. But now, you can also lose yourself in the beautiful landscapes of India.
In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the Ministry of Tourism has joined hands with Netflix to showcase India’s beauty through Netflix’s storytelling. As part of the collaboration, Netflix and MoT will work together to identify how travel destinations can be meaningfully integrated into Netflix India’s original storylines.
Wondering how this will work? The beautiful Indian destinations will appear in the series you watch, indirectly promoting tourism. Additionally, these landscapes and cultural spots will naturally inspire viewers to visit in real life.
Indian Destinations On Screen
Think of the Nilgiri forests in The Elephant Whisperers, the mysterious shores of the Andaman Islands in Kaala Paani, the vibrant fields of Punjab in Amar Singh Chamkila, the bustling streets of Rajasthan in Mismatched, and also the misty hills of Kalimpong in Jaane Jaan. These Netflix series have successfully showcased India’s richness to global audiences.
Furthermore, titles like Emily in Paris and When Life Gives You Tangerines have influenced viewers to plan holidays in Paris and South Korea. In the same way, Indian landscapes and culture will inspire viewers to explore those destinations in real life.
Speaking on the partnership, Ms V. Vidyavathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, said, “This collaboration with Netflix reflects our shared commitment to showcasing India’s cultural richness and diversity.”
Monika Shergill, Vice President, Netflix India, said, “At Netflix, we’ve always believed that India’s stories are as vast and varied as its landscapes – rich with heart, history, and a unique cultural rhythm. Through this partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, we’re not just reaffirming our commitment; we’re celebrating the very soul of India, its diversity, its people, and its voices.” She further added, “Together, we hope to create more opportunities for local talent and communities to thrive, and to share the magic of India with the world.”
Netflix has previously collaborated with tourism boards and government agencies in several countries, including France, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, and Greece. And now, this is Netflix’s first partnership with a tourism governing body in South Asia.
