Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Once Prayed At This 900-YO Shiva Temple In Pune, Known For Its Swayambhu Shivling

Imagine walking through the same space where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj once stood with his mother, Rajmata Jijabai, nearly four centuries ago. Praying in front of a swayambhu Shivalinga that naturally emerged from the ground adds to the magic of Someshwar Temple.

The Untold History Of Someshwar Temple In Pune

Known also as Someshwarwadi, Someshwar Temple was constructed during the Yadava era in 950 AD and is believed to be over 900 years old. Over centuries, the rules changed, dynasties shifted, and cities got built, but the temple has stood in its place, maintaining its sanctity. The significance of the temple is increased by its connection to Shivaji Maharaj. Because of her deep devotion to Lord Shiva, his mother, Jijabai, would frequently bring the young Shivaji here to pray. 

At the very centre of this temple lies its most sacred part: the Swayambhu Shivling. “Swayambhu” means self-manifested or self-originated. In contrast to the majority of idols that are carved by human hands, this Shivalinga is thought to have naturally emerged from the earth. Even today, it lies slightly below ground level, and though devotees are no longer allowed to go too close, they can still see it from a short distance.

There’s also a beautiful legend attached to Someshwar temple. A cow was spotted daily pouring milk over a snake hole approximately 700 years ago. A cowherd noticed this strange act, and soon Lord Shiva appeared in his dream, telling him to dig the spot. When he did, the Shivling was revealed. That is why people believe this place is “jagrut,” a living presence of Shiva who listens to prayers and fulfils wishes.

The Architecture And Surroundings

The Hemadpanthi-style Someshwar Temple is constructed from solid black stone, which is renowned for its durability and classic beauty. Enclosed by tall stone walls that resemble a fort, the temple complex spans 3.5 acres. Along with smaller shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Bhairavnath, the temple is home to the main Shiva shrine. A towering 40-foot Deepmala (lamp tower) adds to the grandeur.

Adding to its charm is the location. The temple is next to Chakra Teerth, a naturally occurring spring that is open all year round, on the banks of the Ram Nadi river. Where Shivaji Maharaj prayed, thousands of devotees still come to find serenity. 

Someshwar temple reminds people that Pune is both a bustling modern city and a place steeped in history.
