Coffee is a favourite morning drink for many of us! It’s basically comfort in a cup, but do you know that many people enjoy it in surprisingly different ways? From unique flavours to unexpected ingredients, this International Coffee Day, let’s take a look at five strange things people add to their coffee!
5 Strange Ingredients People Add To Their Coffee
1. Salt
Adding a pinch of salt may sound unusual, but coffee lovers around the world follow this practice. Just a little bit of salt can help cut down the bitterness of coffee and make it taste smoother. Surprisingly, a pinch of salt can also help the natural flavours of the coffee brew stand out more. So, the next time you make coffee, do try adding salt, but remember, don’t add too much. Otherwise, your morning beverage will taste too salty.
2. Butter
Adding butter to coffee may sound strange, but since bulletproof coffee is all the rage right now, this ingredient is not unheard of. People believe that adding butter or sometimes ghee to coffee can give them an energy boost and keep them full for longer, especially if you drink it in the morning. Plus, butter also makes coffee taste creamier. It is recommended to always try this combo with black coffee, not the ones made with milk.
3. Egg
Egg is another strange ingredient people add to coffee. In Vietnam, Egg Coffee is particularly loved by coffee lovers. It is made by whipping egg yolks with condensed milk and then adding the concoction to strong brewed coffee. The creamy egg layer gives the cuppa a smooth finish and also makes it taste like a dessert. Egg is also believed to help reduce bitterness and make the coffee taste richer. On this International Coffee Day, step out of your comfort zone and try this peculiar drink!

4. Tonic Water
Tonic water + coffee. The combo may sound strange, but surprisingly, it works really well. People usually pour cold tonic water over ice and add a shot of espresso on top. The result is called ‘Espresso Tonic’. And believe us when we tell you that this fizzy drink tastes so crisp and refreshing that you will actually put aside all other cold beverages for this in summer.
5. Cheese
Adding cheese to coffee is a common practice followed by some people. In Finland, some people put a cube of cheese into the bottom of their coffee and let it soften and absorb the hot coffee. After they finish, they usually eat this cheese with a spoon. In Colombia too, people sometimes drop a cheese cube in coffee and let it melt inside. This addition gives the cuppa a creamy and salty flavour, which they like.
So, on this International Coffee Day, we challenge you to try adding any of these ingredients to your coffee and let us know how you feel about it.
