Viral Video Shows Watermelon Peeling Like Paper; No, It’s Not Because Of Chemicals

A video is now going viral showing a watermelon, a refreshing fruit we enjoy in the summer, peeling like paper. The short clip has raised many questions among netizens, who are now curious if this happens due to chemicals. Let us explain what it actually means.

Watermelon Peeling Like Paper After Being Refrigerated

According to a post on X by @TyrantOppressor, the watermelon was bought by a man in the evening. It may have been warm, so he decided to keep it in the fridge for a while. After some time, when he took it out to eat, he noticed that the outer layer of the watermelon was peeling away like paper. The peeling of the green layer of a fruit we enjoy the most in the summer has triggered widespread concerns regarding the safety of fruits available in the market.

Many netizens assumed that the peeling was due to chemicals used to enhance appearance or extend shelf life. Under the post, there were questions like, “What’s happening with the watermelon?” and “Is this watermelon safe for consumption?” But this is not the case. There are no chemicals involved.

Here’s Why This Happens

Under the same post, an explanation was also shared by many users. Apparently, the watermelon’s outer skin peeling off is caused by freezing or overly cold storage. The man had kept the watermelon in the fridge. The cold storage may have formed ice crystals inside, which caused the rind layer to separate from the fruit when brought back to room temperature.

One user also explained that this is a natural process. When a watermelon is stored in a fridge and then exposed to warm air, the thin waxy outer layer can separate due to a sudden temperature change. This means that a watermelon peeling like paper is normal and not due to chemicals or plastic.
