Hyderabad-based comedian Saikiran is not one to mince his words. Especially when it comes to the right way to pronounce “dosa” ( D that sounds like “the”) and even eat one. This time, Saikiran has a bone to pick with people who don’t know how to eat Masala Dosa. Is there a right way to eat the ubiquitous South Indian dish? Apparently, yes! In fact, the comedian even revealed there are two types of Masala Dosa eaters — centre and side.
Two Ways To Eat Masala Dosa— Centre Vs Side
With his signature deadpan expression and serious PSA-like video, Saikiran’s latest reel is almost a tutorial on how to eat Masala Dosa. The comedian revealed that many food vloggers popularised the notion that the right way to eat the dosa is from the middle, where the potato gravy sits. Calling it a “fork and knife moment”, he said that eating Masala Dosa in any other way is termed wrong.
Confessing to being a “side eater” instead of the commonly found centre eaters, Saikiran lists reasons why his way is the right way. Most importantly, the optimum way. Fresh off the pan, the Masala Dosa needs to be torn from the side, dunked in chutney or sambar and then devoured. He recommends starting with the crisp hot outer edges and slowly making your way into the middle. “It will remain hot because of the hot potato curry inside,” he explains scientifically.

Saikiran Says Why Eating It From The Side Is Better
“If you begin in the middle and then reach the edges, it will lose its crispness,” reasons Saikiran. In air-conditioned restaurants, he calls it nothing but a race against time. Another reason why he disses centre eaters is because one people risk burning their fingers if they tuck into the middle of the Masala Dosa right away.

He ends this viral video by advising dosa fans not to always be a warrior by attacking it from the centre. Rather, they can become strategists by gnawing it from the sides. So, what kind of a dosa eater are you? We’re side eaters, what about you?
