Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda To Get European-Style Streets, Pedestrian Promenade & Al Fresco Dining Soon!

Kala Ghoda Mumbai

Mumbai folks, here’s yet another reason to plan a visit to Kala Ghoda soon! As part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Kala Ghoda beautification plan, the civic body has planned to transform the heritage neighbourhood and give it a European makeover and make it more pedestrian-friendly. Here’s all you need to know about it.

BMC Plans European-Style Makeover For Kala Ghoda In Mumbai

Kala Ghoda in Mumbai is set to get a European-style makeover under Phase 1 of a new beautification project. According to The Economic Times, the plan aims to transform the popular South Mumbai precinct with cobbled walkways, vibrant street art murals, and dedicated public seating zones, creating a more pedestrian-friendly cultural promenade.

Set to open to pedestrians later this month, the first phase of the project has redesigned five lanes in Kala Ghoda—VB Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Ropewalk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road. The revamped stretch will feature cobblestone paving, murals on surrounding walls, and street artefacts installed along the pathways, according to The Economic Times.

The Kala Ghoda precinct will become a no-vehicle zone on weekends, allowing pedestrians to explore the cultural charm of the area. To ensure no vehicles enter the area over the weekends, BMC has installed hydraulic bollards as well. Spread across 3,433 sq m, the beautification project will also include walking trails, along with dedicated seating and art zones to enhance the appeal of the heritage neighbourhood.

What Other Changes Are Planned?

While Phase 1 is almost complete, BMC is now formulating a policy to allow al fresco dining in Kala Ghoda in Mumbai. This means you may soon be able to enjoy meals in the open air, with restaurants placing outdoor tables and chairs under a regulated framework.

Under Phase 2 of the project, more streets in Kala Ghoda will be revamped with cobblestone paving to enhance the character of the area. The next stretch will include Nagindas Master Road, Chamber of Commerce Lane, the lane next to Kalki on Manek Motwani Marg, and the extension of Fort Street up to Shahid Bhagat Singh Road.
