Good news! India’s first bullet train is set to launch soon. It will reduce travel time to just two hours and seven minutes between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, making travel significantly faster! The high-speed train will pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, with 12 stations planned along the route, including several in Mumbai.
India’s First Bullet Train To Launch Soon!
Indian Railways has now accelerated work on the bullet train corridor between Vapi and Sabarmati in Gujarat. They are aiming to complete this stretch by December 2027. Not only that, but the entire project, which will launch India’s first bullet train from Maharashtra to Sabarmati, is expected to be completed by December 2029.
As per a report by The New Indian Express, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project (MAHSR) spans a total of 508 km. It is currently under development with both technical and financial support from Japan. The high-speed bullet train will pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The 12 stations planned include Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

Construction Work In Full Swing
As per TNIE, construction work at all these stations is progressing at full speed. The total estimated cost of the project is around ₹1,08,000 crore. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding 81% of it. The remaining 19% is being financed through equity contributions from the Ministry of Railways (50%) and the governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat (25% each). So far, authorities have already spent a total of cost of ₹78,839 crore on this much-awaited project.
As per the same report, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament that out of 28 tender packages, 24 have been awarded. In terms of construction progress, workers have completed 393 km of pier construction, 329 km of girder casting, and 308 km of girder launching.
Not just that, but work on the undersea tunnel, which spans approximately 21 km, has also begun. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is currently preparing the detailed project reports (DPRs). Plans to expand the high-speed rail (HSR) network in India beyond the MAHSR corridor are also in the works to meet rising passenger demand.
