Trust Gen Z to start a new trend every other day. This time, they have popularised a travel hack called ‘destination dupes’, and honestly, anyone who loves travelling can benefit from it. It basically means swapping expensive destinations for similar yet affordable ones. Scroll down to know more about this travel trend and how you can use it while planning your next dreamy getaway.
What Are Destination Dupes?
There is a new travel trend gaining momentum on social media. And no, it is not about visiting usual touristy spots or trying underrated cafes. It is something different, and it might actually be useful to you. Apparently, Gen Z has popularised a travel hack called destination dupes (short for duplicates). It means swapping famous, expensive and overcrowded tourist hotspots for lesser-known alternatives that offer a similar vibe at a much lower cost.
According to Times Now, the concept is borrowed from Gen Z’s shopping habits. Just like expensive designer bags are replaced with budget-friendly dupes, they are now applying the same idea to travel. They are choosing places that offer a similar culture, vibe and beauty but at a fraction of the cost. This way, they spend less but experience more. Sounds cool, right?

Popular Destination Dupes You Can Actually Consider
According to The Financial Express, a 2025 Bank of America survey revealed that 92% of travellers are open to visiting a destination dupe. Millennials are also open to choosing more affordable options over popular travel destinations. To make it simple, people are now choosing Boston instead of London for a similar city experience. Instead of Paris, some travellers can consider heading to Prague, Georgia, and Romania for a similar romantic vibe.
While travelling to Italy, many are choosing Verona instead. It not only saves money but also offers an old-world charm. Other examples include choosing Taiwan instead of Tokyo for a similar city buzz, Hoi An instead of Kyoto, and Albania instead of Greece or Turkey. At the end of the day, we all know that Gen Zs are more open to trying new experiences and exploring hidden gems. They are choosing unique destinations that help them make better memories without spending too much.
But honestly, this trend of destination dupes is not bad at all. Think about it, instead of going to a place that already sees a lot of people, how nice would it be to visit a place that looks similar but is more affordable? It is actually a great travel hack, right?
