This is indeed good news for Hindus who call Trinidad and Tobago their home. The country has a large population of people of Indian descent, with many families living there for several generations. Indian culture has had a deep influence on the country, be it in its cuisine or the excitement with which festivals like Diwali and Holi are celebrated in the nation.

Now, Trinidad and Tobago is seeking to further strengthen its position as a cultural and spiritual hub for Hinduism in the western hemisphere. As per a report by DD News, Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath announced the government’s strong support for this new initiative during discussions with several religious leaders. The meeting also included representatives who helped facilitate the arrival of a Ram Lalla idol replica from Ayodhya earlier this year.

The ‘Ramayan Country’

According to the DD News report, Minister Barry Padarath referred to Trinidad and Tobago as the ‘Ramayan country’, as the nation plays a unique role in preserving Hindu traditions outside India. Furthermore, government officials are now exploring ways to advance this new temple project, viewing it not just as a spiritual step but also as a move to attract more tourists to the country.

Prem Bhandari, founder of the Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir in New York, has proposed the creation of an ‘Ayodhya Nagari’ for devotees in North America. This will serve as a space for those who cannot travel to the holy city of Ayodhya in India for various reasons. Prem Bhandari presented this proposal to Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The special ceremony was organised by Prem Bhandari and Amit Alagh, chairperson of the Ayodhya Shri Ram Organisation in Trinidad and Tobago. The event drew thousands of devotees and marked a major milestone for the country’s Indian community.
