A massive winter storm is set to hit the US East Coast, and the impact on air travel has already begun. Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from New York City and Newark for February 23, 2026, as heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous conditions.
Air India Cancels New York Flights
The airline announced that a severe winter storm, forecast for February 22 and 23, will significantly affect flight operations in New York, New Jersey and nearby areas. Putting passenger and crew safety first, Air India decided to cancel all flights operating to and from New York and Newark on Sunday.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the airline said the decision was taken “in view of the safety, well-being and convenience of our passengers and crew.” Dedicated teams are now helping affected passengers with rebookings and other assistance. The post also said, “Travellers scheduled to fly on February 23 are advised to contact Air India’s 24×7 call centre at +91 1169329333 or +91 1169329999, or check the airline’s official website for updates.”
The cancellations come as weather authorities issue serious warnings across the region. According to News 18 reports, the National Weather Service has placed New York City and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut under blizzard warnings. Forecasters say the region could receive up to 1.5 feet (46 cm) of snow, especially in and around New York City, including Long Island.
Heavy snowfall is expected to peak between Sunday and Monday. Winds could blow at speeds of 25 to 35 mph (40 to 56 kmph), with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, particularly in coastal areas from New Jersey to south-eastern New England, News 18 reported.

Other Airlines Also Affected
It is not just Air India that is impacted. As the strong storm moves closer to the East Coast, Delta Air Lines has also cancelled a number of flights, according to News 18. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport, as airports in the area are getting ready for significant disruptions.
For now, safety remains the top priority. With heavy snow, powerful winds and possible flooding on the way, airlines are choosing caution over risk. Travellers flying between India and the United States may face delays, but as authorities say, it’s better to wait for clear skies than brave a blizzard.
