At least nine people died on the spot when a bus carrying 35 tourists, one driver and a cleaner lost control and fell into a gorge on the Chinturu-Maredumilli ghat in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. The tragic accident happened on the night between Thursday and Friday. The injured tourists are currently being treated in hospitals. Here’s more on this.

Bus Gets Into An Accident In Andhra Pradesh

The bus was on its way to Annavaram from Bhadrachalam when it veered off the road due to a sharp curve. It fell into a gorge in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. According to a report by Hindustan Times, several passengers were injured in the accident. They were immediately moved to Bhadrachalam Hospital for treatment. Authorities are trying to determine the exact cause of the accident and identify the people who lost their lives.

According to a report by India Today, the incident occurred around 5:30 am on Friday, December 12, near Tulasipakalu village. The bus was from the Chittoor district and was transporting tourists from the Bhadrachalam temple. Reportedly, the vehicle was navigating a sharp turn in the forested ghats when it lost control and fell into a gorge. Nine casualties have been reported so far.

Official account of PM Narendra Modi also took to his X handle to express his condolences. He wrote, “Pained by the loss of lives due to a bus mishap in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.” PM Modi also announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF to the families of those who lost their lives. A compensation of  ₹50,000 will also be given to those injured.

Rescue Operations Still Underway

Rescue operations are still ongoing, and the death toll is likely to rise. According to a report by The Times of India, the accident occurred in the hills, where mobile network coverage is unavailable. This is why it took some time for the news to reach officials. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed his shock over the tragic accident. He has ensured that all possible help is being extended to the victims.

Eyewitnesses described the scene to India Today as chaotic. Passengers were trapped inside the vehicle. The police and local rescue teams started immediate rescue operations, which are currently ongoing. Authorities are awaiting more details on this unfortunate bus accident in Andhra Pradesh.
