At 14,272 Ft, Ladakh Holds World’s Highest Frozen Lake Marathon In Pangong With 460 Runners

The Union Territory of Ladakh has achieved something big. It successfully conducted the 4th Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon in 2026. This world’s highest frozen lake marathon concluded recently and saw around 460 participants running in the 21 km and 5 km categories. Scroll down to know more about this exciting marathon!

Fourth Edition Of Ladakh’s Frozen Lake Marathon

The fourth edition of the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2026 in Ladakh has now strengthened the region’s reputation as a destination for winter tourism and high-altitude adventure sports. According to WION, the marathon was held at an altitude of 14,272 feet above sea level. The two-day event happened in extreme temperatures ranging between -15°C and -17°C.

You would like to know that the marathon in Ladakh drew 460 runners from 21 Indian states. The official X page of Ladakh Warriors also shared this update along with some amazing pictures. They wrote, “soldiers of the Ladakh Scouts Regiment displayed exceptional endurance, resilience, and competitive excellence in one of the world’s highest frozen lake marathons.” Notably, this is the world’s highest frozen lake marathon and is also registered in the Guinness World Records.

According to reports, the Ladakh Scouts Regiment also displayed exceptional endurance and resilience. Moreover, the marathon drew international participants from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Australia.

Locals Add Strong Community Presence

According to WION, personnel from the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were also present at the venue. Residents and children from nearby villages attended this high-altitude marathon, adding a strong community presence. On the opening day, 186 runners competed in the 10 km race. Meanwhile, 46 athletes took up the 42 km full marathon across the frozen surface of Pangong Lake.

Women athletes also made a mark, with 16 participants in the 10 km category and six in the full marathon. Meanwhile, on the second day, many locals and visitors took part in the 21-km half-marathon and 5km races. 

The marathon was organised by Thin Ice Adventures in collaboration with the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh and the Indian Army. According to NDTV Sports, all medical centres along the route were equipped with trained personnel and equipment to handle any kind of medical emergencies. Moreover, participants were allowed to run on the frozen lake only after wearing safety equipment.
