Electronic Toll Collection

India will soon have a barrier-free highway toll system. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that a new electronic toll collection system will be rolled out for motorists on highways. It will ensure an easier and seamless travel experience. Here are all the details you should know about this.

India To Soon Have Electronic Toll Collection Systems

Within a year, the current system of toll collection will be replaced by an electronic system that will ensure a smooth experience for motorists on highways. According to a report by Hindustan Times, this announcement was made by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Thursday. This electronic system has already been rolled out in 10 locations and will be extended across India within a year.

No vehicle will be stopped during its journey for toll collection. According to Hindustan Times, the official statement reported that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme. It is a unified, interoperable platform for electronic toll payments. The whole system aims to streamline toll collection across India’s highways.

How Does The NETC System Work?

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the NETC system will use FASTag, a Radio Frequency Identification-based device, which would be fixed to the vehicle’s windscreen. It will allow automatic toll collection from the linked account of the user. This means one will no longer need to stop for toll collection.

This system not only makes travel seamless but is also an innovative way to ease congestion on highways. It will help reduce waiting at toll booths while improving the overall experience. You should also know that authorities are currently working on 4,500 highway projects worth ₹10 lakh crore across the country.
