Bengaluru Hospital Cafe Slammed For Serving Bread & Sugary Jam To Sick Mother

Bengaluru Hospital Food

A viral post on X has now raised concerns over the food being served at hospitals in Bengaluru. The discussion online started when a social media user recalled an incident involving a woman complaining about finding only junk food in a hospital, which sparked a debate on nutrition standards in Indian healthcare facilities. Here’s what happened.

Bengaluru Hospital Food Sparks Debate Online

Despite being centres for health, a large number of hospital cafeterias and vending machines offer processed, fried and sugary food. This is what recently sparked a discussion online. An X user, Pooja (@poojaofficial5), recounted the experience of a woman staying at a hospital in Bengaluru while taking care of her sick mother.

The woman was shocked when her mother was served plain white bread with sugar-loaded jam for breakfast. This was not what she expected as good nutrition for her mother. In search of something better, she went to the hospital canteen and found counters packed with samosas, fried paneer rolls, veg burgers, cheese sandwiches, waffles, bagels and all kinds of deep-fried snacks, just like a fast-food court.

Netizens Discuss Nutrition Standards In Indian Hospitals

The X user, Pooja, shared how a place dedicated to healing and recovery seemed to offer very little that actually promotes health. She ended her post by writing, “The irony could not be more striking. A place dedicated to healing and recovery seemed to offer very little that actually promotes health.”  Many netizens shared their opinions regarding the incident in the comments section.

One user wrote, “This is unacceptable.. hospitals should serve nutrient-dense food to aid recovery.”  Another user shared her experience and wrote,  “Yes, my diabetic mom was given sweets with her meals. I ignored it for the first meal but reprimanded them the second time.” A third user wrote, “The hospital canteen is for the people accompanying the patient. Patients have food based on their body requirements. I would hope you knew that.”
