In a recent development, the civic body in Bengaluru, BBMP, has issued notices to over 400 establishments, including bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs, for failing to comply with designated smoking area (DSA) rules. These violations come despite the enforcement of guidelines last year.
Over 400 Establishments In Bengaluru Under Fire For No Designated Smoking Area
A total of 412 joints, including popular restaurants, pubs, hotels, clubs and bars across Bengaluru, have now come under fire. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued official notices to all these places for not following the rules related to designated smoking areas (DSAs).
According to a report by the Times of India, the violations come despite the enforcement of strict guidelines related to DSAs last year. As per these rules, any public refreshment space, like a hotel or restaurant, with seating for more than 30 people or with 30 or more rooms, must set up a separate and enclosed smoking zone.

South Zone Tops The List Of Violators
As per the same report, the South Zone had the highest number of rule-breaking establishments. A total of 97 places here were issued notices by the BBMP. This was followed by Bommanahalli with 72, East Zone with 63, RR Nagar with 52, Mahadevapura with 37, Yelahanka with 36, Dasarahalli with 35, and West Zone with 23.
The BBMP has directed all these businesses to construct proper DSAs within a week. The civic body has also warned that failure to do so can lead to the suspension of their operating licences. These rules are aligned with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). It aims to ban smoking in public places and aims to protect non-smokers and minors.
DSAs, as per guidelines, must be enclosed spaces approved by the concerned authorities. No smoking is allowed outside these designated zones. Moreover, these restaurants and clubs in Bengaluru must now urgently set up authorised smoking areas. If they fail to do so, the civic body may cancel their licenses cancelled by the civic body.
